Leaky Wand? Check Your Washers.

If your watering wand has a leak that looks like this, it is time to examine the washer inside. High pressure water flowing through the connection point causes the material to erode. Furthermore, repeated contact with the male end of the connection leads to weakening or tearing of the washer. Given enough time, the size and strength of the washer can reduce to the point that it no longer provides an effective seal. So, much like a tire, washers wear down through usage and need to be replaced.

Unlike with tires, you do not take your watering wands in for servicing. Therefore, it is beneficial to occasionally check for signs of heavy erosion, cracking, or general deformation. If they look worn out, then it is time for replacement.

In general, if you notice dripping from any hose-thread connection point while using your wand, this is the tell-tale sign that washers need to be replaced.

Even if no obvious issues are observed, it is good practice to periodically replace washers within your tools. It is generally recommended to replace your washers every 6-12 months, depending on individual watering demands.
