Dissolved Oxygen

How Healthy Is Your Water?

Dissolved oxygen (DO) in your irrigation water is an untapped tool in horticulture. Increasing the DO level in your water increases root mass and fine root hairs resulting in increased growth & overall plant health, and better fertilizer utilization. However, adding oxygen (O2) to your water is not that easy.

Beyond Saturation Limits

Increasing the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) beyond normal saturation levels requires different methods than just injecting oxygen alone.

For example, the maximum saturation level of dissolved oxygen in 70˚F water is only approximately 9 ppm. It may be advantageous to start much higher than this in a growing operation because DO can be consumed by oxidative demands such as biofilm in piping, high water temperatures, and pressure changes.

Ozone...

DRAMMwater uses ozone (O3) as our oxidizer of choice for disinfection.

Unlike other disinfectants, and most other ozone systems, our ozonation system design and process leaves the water super-saturated with higher levels of dissolved oxygen, as much as 12 times the normal saturation limit.

Ozone can also eliminate biofilm, including the biofilm matrix in the, and other bio-matter in the irrigation system, allowing the levels of dissolved oxygen to remain high.

Byproducts

Most other disinfectants leave byproducts that are harmful to the plants you grow. Others may leave some dissolved oxygen, but never more than the maximum, normal saturation level.

An ozone system that is properly designed and controlled results in exceptionally high levels (supersaturation) of DO in the water.

Plant Growth

Most plants require at minimum 5 to 6 ppm of DO for healthy growth.

Irrigation water with levels of DO lower than this can actually cause oxygen to leave the plant through the roots, impacting plant health and growth.

A DRAMMwater ozone system can be designed to generate supersaturated dissolved oxygen levels in irrigation water. The resulting improvements in plant growth and reductions in chemicals and fertilizers reported by our grower customers is significant.

DRAMMwater designs and sells custom ozone systems taking into account your irrigation flow rates, water quality, and the oxidative demand. Dramm systems are engineered for maximum efficiency and safety by ensuring that the ozone gas is  sufficiently dissolved and available for water disinfection.

Dissolved Oxygen Needs Sanitation to Be Effective

Barrier Water Treatment vs Holistic Water Treatment with Complete Ozone Systems

Filtration systems, heat-pasturization and ultra-violet sanitation systems all employ a barrier to eliminate or prevent contaminants from moving down stream of the barrier. This method may remove undesirable components in your water, but they do not provide any residual sanitation in the plumbing and other equipment downstream and they do nothing to help promote the health of the crop.

Choosing the Right Dissolved Oxygen Meter

There are many different meters available on the market. Choosing the right dissolved oxygen meter can be difficult. While we don't sell these tools, we can help break down the choices to make the selection easier.
