Specialized Watering Tools for Every Need

In 1941 John Dramm invented the 400AL Waterbreaker. Since then, Dramm has continued to develop a wide variety of watering tools for different needs. This allows growers a wide variety of tool combinations.

400PL Waterbreaker

In addition to the standard, soft-rain pattern of the 400 ALand PL Waterbreakers, Dramm has tools that vary the droplet size, pattern and flow rate to help with watering plants at different stages and in different containers and media types. These nozzles are paired with a variety of lengths and angles of Handi-Reach handle, an aluminum wand  that helps to put the water right were it needs to go. The correct shut-off valve completes the tool.

While Dramm produces packaged colored products in standard lengths with valves and nozzles included for home gardeners, most growers choose from individual components to maximize the efficiency and effect for their different crops and growing systems.

Nozzle selection is based on the softness of the pattern, the volume of output, the width of the pattern, the amount of water per square inch and the droplet size.

  • The 400AL and PL offer a soft pattern that showers plants gently without reducing water flow.
    • This nozzle works well for over-the-top of the plant watering or watering directly to the soil or media.
  • The 170AL and PL Waterbreakers offer a similar pattern with a smaller disc. The flow is lower, but the droplets are similar.
    • Perfect for smaller containers and reduced flow rates. Throttle the valve to control flow while maintaining a gentle pattern.
  • The 1000PL Series of Waterbreakers feature finer holes in varying widths of coverage.
    • Great for younger or more tender plants.
    • Narrow pattern allows for focused watering, the wider pattern for less water per plant.
    • The wider the pattern, the less water per square inch.
    • Pair this with an In Line Filter for best results.
  • The 750PL uses similar holes as the 1000PL, but with 25% fewer. This allows for less water per sq inch.
    • Great for dry growing or for throttling to achieve lower flow rates.
  • The 480 AL and PL use the same hole size and pattern as the 1000PL but with half as many holes.
    • Throttle the valve for very low flow with fine droplets.
  • The Commercial Fan Nozzle creates a low-flow, rectangular pattern great for matching to tray widths.
    • Throttle the valve to allow for minimal water flow while still maintaining a pattern.
  • The FoggIt Series and the 510 Seedling Nozzles mist plants with a variety of flow rates.
    • Great for germination and propagation.
  • The 350PL is a fast-watering, high flow, flood nozzle with a highly-aerated flow.
    • Great for fast watering directly to the soil.
    • Pair this with an In Line Filter for best results.

The Handi-Reach Handles come in lengths from 16″ to 72″ with 45˚ or 90˚ bends. The length and angle allow for different combinations to let the grower put the water right where it is needed.

The length should be selected to maximize reach while maintaining a consistent distance to the watered surface. This keeps the water even as the grower moves through the crop.

The angle helps as well. A 45˚ angle keeps the nozzle level with crops on the ground or allows for the nozzle to be aimed below the leaves directly at the media in the pot. A 90˚ bend helps to reach hanging baskets or to position the nozzle level with the plants on a table or bench. This is most important for younger plants where evenness of watering is paramount.

Valve selection should be based on function, flow-rate and comfort. Most Dramm valves are 1/4 turn ball valves or variations of this design. Larger or smaller holes in the ball as well as position of ball from fully open to fully closed, regulate the flow. Ball valves are usually activated using a single handle, which can make them less comfortable to repeatedly turn on and off. Dramm manufactures our OneTouch valvesthat use a ball that is integrated into an elongated grip. The handle is adjusted with a thumb, making them easy to adjust with one hand.

Dramm also manufactures a spring-loaded, plunger valve that automatically closes when the handle is released. This valve, has a reduced flow due to the valve type, but allows for easy on-and-off, preventing drips and watering outside of the container.

Growers should match nozzle requirements to valve flow rates and types. If you want a high-flow nozzle, you are best off using a high-flow valve. Don’t limit your output by choosing the wrong valve. The ability to throttle the flow easily will be useful with certain nozzles and for certain crops.

Finally, considering the construction can have an impact on use as well. Our Brass Shut-Off combines high-flow with and easy quarter turn operation and maximum durability. However, it is heavier than other valves. Some growers prefer lighter-weight valves that are less durable for less user-strain.

All of the above connects to the hose. Dramm offers one of the most flexible and durable hoses on the market: ColorStorm Rubber Hose. This hose is easy to use and will last seasons. It is bright yellow so it is very visible to prevent tripping. Pair this with our Brass Hose Swivel for less torsion and easy twist removal when watering.

Selecting the right combination of tools will impact your day-to-day watering. Consider the different ways you grow and the different crops grown when picking your watering tools. The Dramm Team will be happy to assist with any questions you might have.
